"Hojo" is a collection of works by Japanese female photographer Mayumi Suzuki. Born in Onagawa, Miyagi Prefecture in 1977, Suzuki grew up with her parents running a photo studio founded by her grandmother. She studied photography at Nihon University College of Art, Department of Photography, and studied under photographer Satoru Watanabe. Since then, she has been working as a freelancer. In 2016, she participated in the photobook production workshop "Photobook as Object" of the "Reminders Project" organized by world-renowned curator and producer Yumi Goto. Suzuki lost both parents in the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Her collection of works, "The Restoration Will," which describes the state of her hometown after the earthquake and her memories with her family, won the Photobook Award 2017 at a photography festival held in Italy, and a popular edition was also published. This work is also based on the photographer's own personal thoughts. Having undergone treatment in order to conceive a child, she projected her own complex emotions onto some unsold vegetables that she happened to come across at a market. It is a delicate and profound book in which she writes down her thoughts, interweaving her own self-portraits with still life photographs of vegetables.
