"Ah, Wilderness" is a novel and photo book by Terayama Shuji, a talented man known for his avant-garde theater group "Tenjo Sajiki," with illustrations by Japan's leading photographer, Moriyama Daido. Terayama contributed text to Moriyama's memorable first photo book, "Nippon Theater Photo Album" (1968), which features snapshots of the public and entertainers seen behind the scenes at theaters and playhouses, and the two spent the intense period of the 1960s and 1970s together. This book is a re-edited version of Terayama's only full-length novel, "Ah, Wilderness," which was serialized from 1965 in the magazine "Gendai no Me," where Nakahira Takuma was involved as an editor, and was later published in book form and paperback, with Moriyama's photographs added. The novel was also made into a movie starring actor Masaki Suda in 2017 (with Moriyama taking the original image visuals), and is set in Shinjuku in the 1960s, depicting the human drama of two young boxers and the colorful characters that surround them. Moriyama's photographs, which are inserted in the book, also capture the various aspects of the seedy Shinjuku streets, giving a sense of the atmosphere of the era. Obi missing.
