Tales of Tono is a photobook by Daido Moriyama (1938-), one of Japan's most highly acclaimed photographers. Moriyama visited Tono in the mid-1970s for his first solo exhibition. Inspired by the classics of Kunio Yanagita, Moriyama was possessed by this folklore town and released his shutters, capturing the forgotten memories and lost primordial landscapes of the Japanese people. After his solo exhibition at Nikon Salon, the photographs were compiled into a photo essay, The Tales of Tono, first published in 1976 and republished in 2007. This book is a re-edited Tate edition of the Tales of Tono published by Tate Publishing in London in 2012. Moriyama's fantasy of his hometown, Tono, including its idyllic nature, rural landscapes, and weathered scenes of provincial cities, is engraved in the deep contrast of monochrome. In 2012, the Tate Modern held an exhibition with William Klein titled "William Klein + Daido Moriyama."
