"Tokyo color_x" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Herbie Yamaguchi. After graduating from Tokyo Keizai University in 1973, he moved to the UK. During that time, Herbie joined the experimental art theater company "Red Buddha" led by musician Tsutomu Yamashita, and performed on stage as a supporting actor in about 100 performances per year. In the mid-1970s, he joined the British photography group "Quality of Life" and began photographing the rock punk music scene that was gaining momentum in the UK while holding photo exhibitions in the UK and France. He lived in a boarding house with Boy George when he was still unknown, and was the only Japanese photographer who could photograph Boy's private life. In the 1980s, he was recognized by Men's Bigi's Takeo Kikuchi and returned to Japan, where he became active in the world of fashion commercials. Most of his works are mainly black and white, but this is his first color work since photographing the powerful punk movement in the UK. Young people are now free to wear their hair in any color, showing brightness and beauty. Just when it seemed like the world was getting better as the coronavirus pandemic began to ease, war broke out. In light of the unstable global situation in recent years, these beautiful and heartwarming works are typical of Herbie, who has used his colors to paint a rainbow of hope for the future of young people.
