Karpaten / Carpathians is a collection of works by German contemporary artist Roman Signer. Signer, who became a topic of conversation in 2024 for his collaboration with Comme des Garcon, expresses time, movement, chance, and other themes in a wide range of methods, including sculpture, installation, and even performance. This book is a collection of photographs taken by Signer during his trip to the Carpathian Mountains of Ukraine and Romania in 2005. The journey was accompanied by stops along the roadside, and the photographs taken are mainly divided into two themes. One is the careful display of home-grown agricultural products such as fruits and vegetables. The other is memorials such as flowers, crosses, and wreaths set up to commemorate the victims of traffic accidents. Although these photographs have a common composition of colorful subjects placed in a landscape and photographed from a certain distance, they highlight the contrasting themes of the richness of life and the sadness of loss, and this book gives a glimpse of Signer's unique perspective.
