"Nude Animal Cigar" is a collection of works by Dutch contemporary photographer Paul Kooiker. Kooiker is known for his unique style of exploring the gap between the everyday and the perverse, the beautiful and the grotesque, with his unique humor and criticality. Since the 1990s, he has challenged the established aesthetic sense and power structure of the gaze in photographic expression. This work was published in conjunction with a retrospective held at the Hague Fotomuseum from 2014 to 2015, and is a compilation of his representative series over the past 20 years. The three motifs in the title, "nude," "animal," and "cigar," are intertwined, and the pages are covered with rough yet calculated visuals. The intentionally rough portraits and still lifes betray the viewer's visual expectations, and are an attempt to re-examine the nature of photography itself, such as fetishism, observation, and record.
