Contranatura is a collection of works by Cristóbal Jara, one of Spain's leading photographers. Born in 1946 during the Spanish colonial period to a German mother, Jara spent his childhood in the United States and the Philippines, studied law and business administration as a student, but decided to become a photographer in 1969. Jara, who experienced religious, and sometimes violent and sexual oppression under a dictatorship during his childhood, has continued to walk around the country (especially rural towns) like Robert Frank did, looking at his own country even after the democratization movement following the death of Franco, capturing its cultural roots and identity from his own unique perspective.
