Ground is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Tomoko Sasaki. Born in Towada City, Aomori Prefecture in 1970, Sasaki is known for quietly focusing on the memories and human activities embedded in the landscapes around her, capturing the accumulated time. Her grounded perspective and careful observation have led her to create photographs imbued with complex meaning. In this book, she walks through the atomic bombed-out city of Nagasaki and its surrounding areas, examining the "traces" that remain in the cityscape and nature today. While pointing her camera at parks, residential areas, quiet slopes, and grassy areas, she purposely avoids capturing the people who live there, instead highlighting the presence of time accumulated in each location. The approximately 80 color photographs avoid strong assertions, yet offer clues for confronting past events. The end of the book features an explanatory text by religious scholar Kazuyuki Nemashi and a map of central Nagasaki. Through the surface landscape, this book offers space for quiet reflection from within.
