"Atlas" is a collection of works by Gerhard Richter, a German painter renowned as one of the world's most important artists. Born in Dresden (formerly East Germany) in 1932, he received an art education, but was deeply influenced by Abstract Expressionism he encountered during a trip to West Germany. He moved to Düsseldorf six months before the construction of the Berlin Wall. He held his first solo exhibition in Munich and Düsseldorf in 1964, and participated in international exhibitions throughout the 1970s. Richter is known for his many famous works, including his "photo paintings" based on photographs and his "color chart" geometric paintings resembling color swatches, but he has consistently pursued the possibilities of painting. This book, published in conjunction with an exhibition that began at the Kawamura Memorial Museum of Art in 2001 and continued in Hiroshima and Oita, presents Richter's masterpiece "Atlas," a massive work consisting of a total of 655 panels at the time. The serial numbers assigned to each panel by the artist himself are faithfully reproduced, and color illustrations of the arrangement of each panel in the installation are included. This is the second printing.
