Japanese photographer Shinichiro Nagasawa's photo collection, "Mary Had a Little Lamb: The Hidden Postwar History Revealed in the Hollow Cavities of the Ogasawara Islands," was born in Tokyo in 1977. He studied under Tamotsu Fujii, went independent in 2006, and began fieldwork in the Ogasawara and Chichijima Islands in 2008. This work documents the memories and absences left behind in post-World War II Japan, quietly capturing the interiors of underground bunkers dug primarily under U.S. military occupation (1945-1968) and the surrounding landscapes. The bunkers, nicknamed "Mary Had a Little Lamb," are a place where suspicions of nuclear weapons deployment remain. Yet, the photographs capture the dark, damp walls, and quiet hollows of the Ogasawara Islands. In contrast, the serene seaside and subtropical trees of the outside world are interwoven with memories of war and present-day life. Together with the accompanying essays, this multilayered book offers a perspective that examines the margins of history. Winner of the 49th Kimura Ihei Photography Award.
