"End Time City" is a photobook by Tel Aviv, Israel-born photographer Michael Ackerman. He moved to New York at the age of seven (he calls himself American) and has been working freelance since the 1990s. Currently affiliated with the French photo agency 'VU,' Ackerman continues to produce unique works that blend art and journalism through mesmerizing black-and-white images, garnering worldwide attention. While he has published three photobooks to date, this is his first, published in 1999. It won him the Nadar Prize and quickly made Ackerman famous worldwide. It features illustrations capturing the daily life of Varanasi (Benares), a major Hindu holy city located along the Ganges River. Pilgrims from Japan and abroad visit the city to bathe, while believers await death in search of enlightenment. This is a masterpiece of black-and-white journalism that uniquely captures the mysterious, chaotic interplay of life and death. English version published by the now defunct Swiss publisher Scalo (original plastic cover missing).
