"Photograph" is a collection of works by Japanese contemporary artist Jiro Takamatsu (1936-1998). In 1954, he studied under Ryohei Koiso at the Department of Painting at Tokyo University of the Arts. From the 1960s onwards, he founded the art collective "Hi Red Center" with Genpei Akasegawa and Natsuyuki Nakanishi, and engaged in avant-garde activities. Takamatsu, who created installations in a variety of styles, including not only painting but also sculpture, photography, and film, was considered a pioneer of conceptual art in the 1960s and 1970s. This is from his "Photographs of Photographs" series, which he produced in the early 1970s. The images are personal records such as family photographs, but by being copies of copies, they are transformed into works of art with a sense of anonymity. Furthermore, the skillful use of light and shadow elevates the images to the level of "art." This ironic approach is characteristic of Takamatsu, and, like Hockney's collages, it represents a new form of photographic expression from an artist's perspective, making it a very new and innovative approach.
