Japanese photographer Kusukazu Uraguchi's photo collection, Shima No Ama (French Edition), features the female divers of Shima. Born and raised in Shima County, Mie Prefecture, Uraguchi worked in the production and sale of pearl jewelry while continuing to photograph the Shima region, particularly the female divers, as an amateur photographer. Famous examples of female diver photography include the work of Italian anthropologist and photographer Fosco Maraini and Yoshinobu Nakamura, as well as Yoshiyuki Iwase, who also worked in business while continuing to photograph his hometown of Onjuku, Chiba Prefecture, for many years. This collection, published by a French publisher, is a new edition of Uraguchi's Shima works, newly compiled from nearly 40,000 negatives and featuring many previously unpublished images. This beautiful book explores Japan's lesser-known culture (heritage) from a foreigner's perspective and showcases the incredible sensitivity and skill of the Japanese photographers who meticulously captured it.
