Japanese (art) photography from the 1960s and 70s, centered around the new movements emanating from VIVO and PROVOKE, remains immensely popular even today. And then there's the composite photography typified by Gocho Shigeo and others, as well as the numerous photobooks and fanzines that emerged as if in response to these dynamic activities. On the other hand, the 1980s is less talked about. It's little known that a group of students at Osaka University of Arts at the time published a unique photobook called "First." This set of four conceptual tabloids, issues 1 to 4, was created by a group of photography students, including Tokoro Yukinori, who made a name for himself with portraits of famous artists and commercials, before switching to a style centered on monochrome landscapes and is now a visiting professor at our school; Nomura Koji, who also left behind many masterpieces in commercials for artists such as Southern All Stars, Mr. Children, and Perfume, but who passed away suddenly in 2013; Kawamura Etsuo, who studied under Kuru Sachiko and then became active in commercials; and Minamiura Mamoru, who studied under Inagoshi Koichi, along with several other photography students.
