The Silence is a collection of works by French photographer Gilles Pérez (1946-). Perez, a member of Magnum Photos, is a photojournalist who has consistently documented the political violence and social divisions of the late 20th century, including Telex Iran, an insider's account of the Iranian Revolution; Here Is the Time, a long-term follow-up on the Northern Ireland conflict; and Farewell to Bosnia, a look at the conflict in the former Yugoslavia. This book focuses on the 1994 Rwandan genocide, presenting the realities of the massacre in churches, the movement of refugees, hospitals and camps, disease and bodies head-on without resorting to evasion or metaphor. The "silence" implied in the title does not refer to the tranquility that follows tragedy, but rather to the very structure of international indifference and ignorance. The composition, which denies easy understanding or relief to the viewer, questions whether photography can be a testimony that demands direct confrontation rather than an explanation of events. This series of harsh images confronts the reader with the role that photography can play in the midst of history, as well as its limitations.
