"Other Voices: Todai Zenkyoto 1968-70" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer and editor Yutaka Hirasawa. Born in 1947, Hirasawa enrolled in the French Literature Department of the Faculty of Letters at the University of Tokyo in the late 1960s, becoming embroiled in the Todai Zenkyoto movement as a student. After graduating, he joined Heibonsha (now Magazine House) and served as editor-in-chief of magazines such as ELLE JAPON, BRUTUS, and TARZAN, becoming known as an editor who has supported Japanese magazine culture. The photographs in this book were taken as a student, prior to his career as an editor. Rather than emphasizing the conflicts and incidents, the photographs quietly capture the inner workings of the movement, such as the expressions and postures of the people gathered at rallies and the atmosphere of dialogue. Structured from a later perspective, Hirasawa carefully examines the everyday scenes in which questions of subjectivity, academic freedom, university autonomy, and researcher ethics were exchanged. This book seeks to listen to the "other voices" that were expressed at the time, rather than the conclusions of the time.
