"USSR 1991 (Cover C, Signed)" is a collection of works by Keizo Kitajima, one of Japan's leading photographers. As the title suggests, this collection is comprised of images taken over the course of approximately one year in the early 1990s, at the time of the collapse of the former Soviet Union. The project began in response to a request from a newspaper company to "take and bring back images and footage of the 15 republics following their collapse." The project was carried out under the extremely dangerous conditions of a socialist state under a bureaucratic government, and features portraits of people paired with landscapes. While the collection includes Russia and Ukraine, the images are more rife with "collapse" and "chaos" than "republics," evoking a sense of uncertainty about the times and the future. Kitajima was very particular about the timing of his photographs as well as the timing of their release, and apparently decided to release this work more than 10 years into the future, when the Soviet Union would have been forgotten. While Kitajima's "1991" project has finally come to an end, this book is worth revisiting in 2023. Three different case covers are available. Limited to 450 copies. Signed by the photographer . (No edition number. However, there is a signature on the title page. AP edition?)
