Atelier is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Yasuhide Kuge (1962-). Since 1990, Kuge has worked as a freelance photographer, continuously capturing scenes from traditional performing arts, modern theater, and contemporary art. This volume focuses on the creative spaces of some of Japan's leading artists. He visited the studios of a diverse range of artists, including Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami, Makoto Aida, Katsura Funakoshi, Shusaku Arakawa, and Tatsuo Miyajima, and colorfully documented these spaces as "places where value is created." Rather than a tidy studio, the photographs capture the breath of spaces where power tools and traces of daily life coexist, highlighting the time and human presence behind the creation of the works. By focusing not on the finished works but on the places that provide the works, this documentary photo collection quietly conveys a cross-section of Japanese contemporary art.
