"Valentino: Collezione Milano" is a book by Bulgarian-born, London-based photographer Liz Johnson Artur (1964-). Artur's photographs, first captured in the mid-1980s by her encounter with the Black community in Brooklyn, New York, have led her to photograph the African diaspora across the globe. Her core project, "Black Balloon Archive," documents the daily lives, bodies, and intimate relationships of Black communities living in urban areas, while also exploring the complexities of culture and identity shaped by a history of diaspora. This book documents Valentino's 2020 collection, "Valentino Collezione Milano," presented in Milan by Valentino Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli. It was produced against the backdrop of a fashion show held amid the extraordinary circumstances of the pandemic. Artur's photographs focus less on the decorativeness of the clothing itself and more on the bodies and gazes of the people wearing them, highlighting the powerful presence of the people walking by. The book also includes a text by Booker Prize-winning author Bernadine Evaristo, and brings together the three perspectives of photography, fashion, and literature to present contemporary themes such as identity and diversity.
