"Otoko Photo-Studies of the Young Japanese Male" is a photo collection by Japanese photographer Yato Tamotsu. After a stint as a male trainee at the Takarazuka Revue, Yato Tamotsu was affiliated with Nikkatsu and also worked as an actor. While Yato is known for photographing Yukio Mishima, his connection with Mishima was first established through his partner, Meredith Witherby, who translated Mishima's "The Sound of Waves" and "Confessions of a Mask." While it is unclear exactly what prompted Yato to take up photography, it seems likely that he was influenced by Witherby, who was financially well-off and culturally educated. Witherby subsequently founded John Weatherhill Publishing and published Yato's photo collections. Yato passed away in 1973 at the age of 48, leaving behind three photobooks: "Tai-do," "Hadaka Matsuri," and "OTOKO." OTOKO was produced by Witherby, who also handled the translation and typography, and published by a Los Angeles publisher. The collection includes poetic black-and-white male nudes, and also includes one illustration of Yukio Mishima.
