"Shakyō Rōjin Nikki 2011.3.11→ (Signed)" is a photobook by Nobuyoshi Araki, one of Japan's leading photographers. Influenced by his father, a clog maker and amateur photographer, he began photography and, after graduating from the Department of Photographic Printing Engineering at Chiba University's Faculty of Engineering, joined Dentsu. While shooting advertising photos, he explored new photographic art using the company's equipment and, from the 1970s onward, published sensational works such as "Oh Japan" and "Sentimental Journey." This book is composed of "photographs taken over a three-month period from March 11, 2011, until June 11" (from the book jacket), and is titled in homage to Katsushika Hokusai, who adopted the name "Gakyō Rōjin Manji" (Manji, the Old Man Mad at Painting) in his mid-70s. The 283 photographs included are Araki's everyday perspective, but all of them are superimposed with lines that look like scratches. "Instead of stopping at the point of taking the photograph, the act of photography is restarted by scratching the negative. Destruction must be turned into regeneration." (From the book jacket). While this may seem to make the immense damage and pain visible, by doing so, it feels like a message unique to Araki has been conveyed.
