"City Lux" is a collection of works by American photographer Ray K. Metzker (1931–2014). Having studied at the Chicago Institute of Design, Metzker thoroughly explored the structure of light and shadow in urban settings. Fragments of people and buildings passing through the streets are abstracted through strong contrasts and pruned framing, causing the city itself to emerge as a visual device. This work re-edits Metzker's long-standing practice of urban photography from the perspective of "light (Lux)," bringing to light the rhythm and tension lurking in urban spaces day and night. By eliminating clear narratives and explanations and sharpening the act of viewing itself, the composition reaffirms the experimental role that Metzker's photography has played in the history of photography, and quietly raises the question of how we see the city.
