Provoke is an important literary magazine in the history of Japanese photography. Founded in 1968 by Takuma Nakahira, Yutaka Takanashi, Koji Taki, and Takahiko Okada, Daido Moriyama joined from the second issue onwards. However, it only published four issues (the final issue being the book "First, Discard the World of Certainty"), and its lifespan was short, lasting only about two years. This book is a photobook published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name held in Paris and Chicago in 2016-2017. It introduces Provoke, which was created against the backdrop of the social conditions of the late 1960s, such as the struggles and student movements, by relating it to social movements and avant-garde art of the 1960s and 70s. Chapter 1, "PROTEST," begins with Hiroshi Hamaya's "Records of Anger and Sorrow" (1960), which covered the Japan-U.S. Security Treaty protests, and introduces works such as Kazuo Kitai's "Resistance" and Shomei Tomatsu's "Okinawa." Chapter 2, "PROVOKE," presents four books in photocopies, as well as representative works (photobooks) by Nakahira, Moriyama, and Takanashi. Chapter 3, "PERFORMANCE," introduces avant-garde artists such as Hi-Red Center and Tatsumi Hijikata. This is an excellent book that comprehensively covers everything from political movements to avant-garde art centered around "Provoke."
