"Into Me / Out of Me," a collection of works edited by American curator Klaus Wiesenbach, is based on the exhibition of the same name held at the PS1 Contemporary Art Center and the KW Institute for Contemporary Art. Conceived after the suggestions of Susan Sontag, this large-scale catalog comprehensively re-examines body/action art from the 1960s onward. Focusing on the relationship between the inside and outside of the body, it is organized into three chapters—"Metabolism," "Reproduction," and "Violence"—and brings together practices surrounding fundamental actions such as ingestion and excretion, generation and injury. Works by over 130 artists, from Marina Abramović and Vito Acconci to Andy Warhol, as well as Nan Goldin and Robert Mapplethorpe, reinterpret the body not as a representation, but as a space connecting with matter and society. Presenting a realm often reduced to extremism and shock with a broad scope that includes emotion and politics, this book quietly reveals the multi-layered nature of images surrounding the body.
