"The Altar of Water Veins: Oi River, Abe River, Tenryu River (Signed)" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Hiroyuki Yagi. Born in Fujieda City, Shizuoka Prefecture in 1948, Hiroyuki Yagi is active not only as a photographer but also as a folklorist, and since the 1980s he has frequently published collections of works that compile folk performing arts, shrines and temples, and festivals in Shizuoka Prefecture. In 1998 he also published "Min Tanaka Dances the Tenryu," a photo collection documenting the "Dance Procession" of Min Tanaka, one of Japan's leading dancers, as he descended the Tenryu River from Lake Suwa to the Hamamatsu Sand Dunes. This book is a photo collection that was probably self-published in 1980, and it captures the history and folklore of the land behind the rivers that flow through the prefecture, as if pursuing the source of their water veins, going further and further upstream. While evoking a sense of indigenous culture reminiscent of Hiromi Tsuchida's "Zokushin," it also evokes a strong "folkloric" quality similar to Masatoshi Naito's "Tono Monogatari," and the photographic style shares common elements. The text at the end, "Mr. Yagi and Tarocco," is written by Naito. Signed by the photographer .
