Photographer Nobuyoshi Araki has produced works that are sometimes sentimental and sometimes radical, ranging from "personal photographs" depicting his own daily life to themes of "life/sexuality" and "death" emanating from motifs such as female nudes and vibrant flowers. He continues to photograph even after losing sight in his right eye due to illness in 2013. This book, "Kumamoto Lullaby," is the catalog for an exhibition held at the Kumamoto City Museum of Contemporary Art in 2008. He has served as a judge for the citizen art exhibition held at the same museum, and the exhibition, held in a place with which he has a connection, seems to have displayed approximately 6,400 photographs from his early career up to 2008. This book is composed of works newly photographed for the exhibition and new works from that period. "Mother and Child Portraits" are nude portraits of ordinary mothers and their small children. 39 pairs of mothers and children, who have not long since given birth, stand before the lens with various thoughts, and Araki captures them straight on without pretense. In addition, it includes three other series: "Iroinka" and "Nikki," a collection of everyday snapshots from 2007 to 2008. Published in 2008, first edition.
