Flock Volume 01 is the first publication from Flock Project, a photography collective based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Founded in 2016 by Aji Susanto Anom, Arif Furqan, and Kurniadi Widodo, Flock Project explores the possibilities of photobooks and zines, viewing "publishing itself"—including editing, printing, binding, and distribution—as a platform for expression, rather than simply presenting individual photographic works. This book marks the starting point of their activities, containing a photozine and text booklet featuring the works of each of the three members, all housed in a box. Unlike typical photobooks that emphasize a single theme or individual artistry, it presents the dialogue and collaborative process surrounding photography by allowing different perspectives and expressions to coexist within a single package. It also strongly reflects the atmosphere of the 2010s, a period of significant development in Southeast Asia's independent publishing culture. This book, which addresses not only the photographs as works of art but also the question of how to deliver them as a book, is an important publication that symbolizes Indonesia's new photobook culture and is an excellent read for understanding the philosophy and practices of Flock Project.
