"Suishu" is a photobook by Japanese photographer Eiichi Sakurai (1909-1998). After graduating from the Faculty of Engineering at Tokyo Imperial University, he joined Takachiho Seisakusho (now Olympus) and worked as an engineer and manager involved in the development of photographic lenses and cameras. At the same time, he studied under Kenkichi Nakajima from 1929 and continued to create photographs throughout his life, making him an unconventional photographer. Published following "Kyoshu" (1977) and "Ryoshu" (1987), this book is the concluding volume of a trilogy that Sakurai compiled in his later years, and can be considered a culmination of his work. Focusing on monochrome works that make the most of the soft rendering of the Best Pocket Kodak (Bestan), the book poetically depicts natural scenes such as trees, mountains and fields, and the changing seasons, quietly expressing a world where nature and humanity live in peaceful harmony. Without relying on flashy forms or techniques, the rich tonality and delicate light woven from a gaze cultivated over many years convey the charm of Sakurai's work, which inherits the lineage of Pictorialism photography unique to Japan. Following publication, exhibitions of his works "Nostalgia," "Traveler's Melancholy," and "Emerald Melancholy" were held at the JCII Photo Salon, and his photographic achievements were reintroduced and re-evaluated.
