"Apiary" is a collection of works by London-based photographer Robin Friend (1983-). Friend, who grew up in Melbourne, continues to photograph the surreal and eerie landscapes lurking in the English countryside, following his debut work "Bastard Countryside." This book, set against the backdrop of Guy Fawkes Night in Lewis, southeastern England, uses the metaphor of night to expose the memories of darkness and the instability of collectivism. Strong cropping and the capture of details using cinema lenses bring to light the tension and political implications lurking within the crowd, questioning how visual images are intertwined with social structures. The world of his work, as a "space of shadow" reflecting the fragility of democracy and the cracks of division, embodies the coexistence of poetic depth and political implications in photographic expression.
