"The Time Ruled by Snow" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Nao Nakai (1978-). Born in Shiga Prefecture, Nakai graduated from the Japan Institute of Photography and received the Encouragement Award at the 4th Yonosuke Natori Photography Awards in 2008. Through long-term photography, she has explored the nature of time surrounding land, nature, and people. For this work, she spent about 100 days each winter in Tsunan Town, Niigata Prefecture, starting in 2015, photographing the Okushin'etsu region, one of the world's leading heavy snowfall areas, including the neighboring city of Tokamachi and Sakae Village in Nagano Prefecture. From 2020, she stayed in Tsunan Town for about a year, confronting the land throughout the four seasons. Starting with the realization that "you can feel the presence of snow when there is no snow," she expanded her gaze not only to the accumulating snow, but also to water, plants, geological strata, pottery, people and animals, bringing to light the snow and time that have governed all existence in this land from about 8,000 years ago to the present. This culmination of work goes beyond a record of a snow country, delving into the multi-layered timelines of land and life by interweaving images that represent different periods of time, regardless of season or chronology.
