"Shikishima (First Edition)" is a collection of works by Japanese female photographer Tamiko Nishimura. Born in Tokyo in 1948, she graduated from Tokyo College of Photography in 1969. While still a student, she photographed underground theater troupes, and after graduation, she continued to photograph while working part-time jobs, submitting her work to camera magazines, and using the money she received to travel and take photographs. Since the 1990s, she has traveled to Europe and South America, continuing her energetic activities. Since 2000, she has published numerous collections of works, mainly focusing on the works she had accumulated up to that point, and most recently, she published "Travelogue," a collection of works composed of illustrations taken during her travels in Asia and Europe from the late 1980s to the present. This book is her first book, published by the vocational school she attended. This book is comprised of illustrations taken during a trip around 1970, from Hokkaido in the north to the Chugoku region in the south. It's a documentary-style book with an avant-garde feel, blending high-contrast and close-up imagery reminiscent of Daido Moriyama with rural depictions like those of Kazuo Kitai. A reprint was published in 2014, but this is a rare first edition.
