"Tokyo Monster" is a collection of works by Japanese artist and art director Asami Kiyokawa. Known for her unique technique of layering embroidery thread and fabric over photographs, Kiyokawa has compiled a series of works using snapshots from Shoichi Aoki's legendary street fashion magazine "FRUiTS" as source material. Focusing on Harajuku in the 1990s, Kiyokawa has added embroidery and collage to photographs documenting young people who dressed freely without being bound by conventional values, transforming them into strange and flamboyant "monsters." Having experienced fashion culture herself as a reader model at the time, Kiyokawa's appeal lies not in mere nostalgia, but in her exploration of the inner world behind dressing up—the complexes, vanity, self-awareness, and desire for transformation. Published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name at Shibuya PARCO MUSEUM in 2014, the collection contains approximately 60 works. Each work is accompanied by words by Yukiko Motoya. This is a striking collection of works that reinterprets 1990s Tokyo street culture from Kiyokawa's unique perspective.
