"Zusammenleben" (Living Together) is a collection of works by German photographer Ute Mahler (1949-). Mahler, one of the leading photographers of former East Germany, studied photography in Leipzig and worked for fashion and culture magazines such as "Sibylle," while also creating works that quietly observe people living in society. In 1990, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, she co-founded the photographers' agency "OSTKREUZ" with other former East German photographers, including Sibylle Bergemann. This book is the first compilation in 2014 of her representative series, which she began photographing in 1972 and worked on for many years during her time in East Germany. She documents various people in monochrome—couples, lovers, parents and children, families, friends, and sometimes even strangers. What Mahler focuses on is not so much the individual people, but the invisible relationships that exist "between" them. Emotions such as intimacy, distance, affection, tension, and loneliness quietly emerge from gazes, body language, and the arrangement of figures. This is an important work by Mahler that reveals the time and atmosphere of GDR society not through political symbolism, but through the daily lives of ordinary people.
