"Sept. 2020 NYC" is a photobook by Japanese photographer Mari Sarai. After studying photography in the United States and working as a photojournalist in New York, Sarai has lived in Tokyo and London before returning to New York, where she has been active on the front lines of fashion and editorial photography. This book is a collection of photographs taken as Sarai walked through New York in September 2020, a city drastically changed by the spread of the coronavirus, documenting the city and the people who live there. In a city that was slowly starting to come back to life after the spring lockdown, she turned her camera to a variety of scenes, including wedding couples, young people enjoying roller skating, Black Lives Matter protests, and people mourning Breonna Taylor. Rather than a record of a silent city, the charm of this work lies in capturing the energy of people who, even in difficult circumstances, have come out into the streets again to express themselves and live. This book is a turning point for Sarai herself, as she opens her keen eye for people, cultivated through many years of fashion photography, to the streets, and takes a step into a new form of documentary expression.
