"USSR 1991" is a photobook by Keizo Kitajima (1954), one of Japan's leading photographers. This is a new edition published in 2025, which compiles the photographs from "USSR 1991," taken over approximately 150 days in 1991 when Kitajima visited the Soviet Union on the brink of collapse and intermittently photographed 15 republics. The Kodachrome color photographs record the daily lives of ordinary people, cities, and public spaces in an era when a massive national system was heading towards disintegration. The work was first presented at the Nikon Salon in 2007 and won the 32nd Nobuo Ina Award. In addition to the 95 photographs from "USSR 1991," this book includes, for the first time, 57 monochrome works from "Eastern Europe," taken by Kitajima during his travels through Eastern European cities from his base in West Berlin in 1983-84, bringing together a perspective that connects Eastern Europe in the 1980s to the collapse of the Soviet Union. This edition includes a newly written essay "Reminiscence" by Kitajima himself, and an essay by Shinobu Kuraishi. Edited by Jinichi Murakami and designed by Satoru Machiguchi, this is not merely a reprint, but an important new edition that re-examines Kitajima's work over many years from a contemporary perspective.
