"Volta Photo" is a photobook by Burkina Faso photographer Sanle Solly (1943). Solly began his career as a photographer in 1960, the year that the country, then known as Haute Volta, gained independence from France, and opened his own photo studio, "Volta Photo," in Bobo Diurasso. From studio portraits to dance halls, concerts, and night parties, he continued to photograph young people enjoying the new era after independence. The images of people dressed in stylish clothes and sunglasses, posing with props, reflect the free spirit of the time, where people tried to present their ideal selves through photography. Solly is an important figure in West African photography, alongside Malik Sidibe and Seydou Keita, and his connection to music culture is also a major characteristic, as he served as the official photographer for the popular band Volta Jazz. This book was published in collaboration with Steidl in conjunction with an exhibition held at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2018, and includes approximately 100 photographs as well as materials such as record jackets. This is a comprehensive monograph that conveys the youthful exhilaration that emerged in West Africa from the 1960s onward through photographs and music.
