Daido Moriyama (1938-), who made a significant impact on the Japanese photography world in the late 1960s as a member of "PROVOKE," capturing street scenes in Shinjuku and other areas in monochrome, was born in Osaka in 1938. He worked for a commercial design company while still in high school, and later became an independent graphic designer, but in the early 1960s he pursued photography. After moving to Tokyo, he worked as an assistant to Eikoh Hosoe before becoming an independent photographer in 1964. This book, "Daido Moriyama (916 Press)," was published in conjunction with Moriyama's exhibition at "Gallery 916," a gallery run by Yoshihiko Ueda, another internationally acclaimed photographer. It contains 106 works edited by Ueda himself, from Moriyama's work since he became independent in 1964 to the present. Mixing monochrome and color images, Ueda's keen sense as an "editor" is evident.
