"Tsukuhae" (月映), a print magazine by Kyokichi Tanaka (1892–1915), Shizuo Fujimori (1891–1943), and Koshiro Onchi (1891–1955), represents the dawn of the Japanese creative print movement. Founded in 1914 by three students of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, it was initially produced as a private edition before being officially published by Rakuyodo, becoming a monumental coterie magazine in the history of modern Japanese printmaking. Moving away from traditional printmaking expressions since Ukiyo-e, they aimed to directly imprint the inner world and spiritual realms of the artists themselves. Inspired by Western Symbolism and Expressionism, such as that of Munch and Redon, they forged their own unique world of art. In particular, Tanaka, who suffered from tuberculosis and died prematurely at the age of 23, has works that vividly depict his fear of death and his intense yearning for life. "Tsuki-e" (Moonlight), in which the three distinct personalities of Fujimori (with his delicate emotional expression) and Onchi (who would later become a pioneer of abstract printmaking) resonate with each other, is a brilliant and important work in the history of modern Japanese art, crystallizing the friendship, struggles, and passion for creation of these young artists through printmaking and poetry.
