"Tokyo: Visions of the City's Darkness 2" is a photobook by Masatoshi Naito (1938-2025), one of Japan's leading photographers and folklorists. Born in Tokyo, Naito graduated from the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Waseda University and gained attention for his experimental "SF photography." His encounter with mummified monks in Tohoku led him to deepen his exploration of folk beliefs, local culture, and the world of the dead, resulting in important works such as "Grandma Explosion!" and "Tono Monogatari." This book is a collection of photographs of Tokyo taken between 1970 and 1985, re-edited by SUPER LABO. It is a sequel to his representative work "Tokyo: Visions of the City's Darkness," published by Meicho Shuppan in 1985, and consists only of previously unpublished works that were not included in the old edition, after a re-examination of the original negatives. The photographs capture people left behind in the shadow of rapid economic growth, street corners at night, and the strange atmosphere that lingers in the corners of the city, all in a powerful monochrome. This book is a condensation of Naito's unique folkloric imagination and photographic expression, viewing Tokyo as a colossal living organism where layers of history and memory accumulate, and envisioning another world lurking beneath the surface of the modern city.
