"Jacob Holdt - United States 1970-1975" is a photobook by Danish photographer Jacob Holt. Born in Copenhagen in 1947 to a pastor's father, Holt went to Canada in his early twenties to work on a farm, and later attempted a hitchhiking journey from Canada to Chile in South America. The scenes he encountered on that journey changed Holt's life. He saw the unknown "other side of America" during his cross-country trip. Racial discrimination against Black people, a harsh daily life that seemed inhumane, drugs, violence, rape, prostitution, crime, gun ownership—the reality of America, which was experiencing dramatic economic growth and becoming one of the world's leading economic powers. Holt spent more than five years, sometimes selling his own blood to buy film, to capture these facts in photographs, and in 1977 he published "American Pictures," which later sparked much controversy. This book is a collection of Holt's representative works.
