My Native Island, Okinawa is a photo collection by Higa Yasuo, a photographer representing Okinawa. After a special feature on Okinawan photographer Hirashiki Kenshichi was aired on NHK's Sunday Art Museum, Hirashiki's posthumous work Goat's Lungs - Okinawa 1968-2005 - caused a great sensation, and more recently, with the work of Ishikawa Ryuichi, "personal photography" by Okinawan photographers has been attracting attention in recent years. The pioneers of Okinawan photography who were active before Hirashiki were Taira Koshichi, known for his representative work Painukaji, and Higa Yasuo. Both became photographers to report the "horrific reality of Okinawa" through photography, but due to "fatigue" and "emptiness," they gradually turned their gaze inward and became devoted to the daily life, lifestyle, and culture unique to "Okinawa." This book is a valuable collection of Higa Yasuo's "Inner Okinawa," which was published as a textbook at his alma mater in May 1972, just before Okinawa was returned to the mainland.
