"Tokyo 1970-1985 (Signed)" is a photo collection by leading Japanese photographer Masatoshi Naito. After graduating from the Department of Applied Chemistry at Waseda University, he worked at Kurashiki Rayon (now Kuraray) for a year before going freelance. He won the Japan Photo Critics Association Newcomer Award for "Japanese Mummies," a photograph he took after being moved by a sokushinbutsu (a self-mummified monk) during a photo shoot at the Dewa Sanzan Mountains. Since then, he has continued to research and explore the ethnology and folk beliefs of the Tohoku region. He has published photo books such as "Oba: Folk Beliefs of Tohoku" (1979) and "Tales of Tono" (1983), as well as ethnologist books such as "Study on Mummy Belief" (1974). This book is a collection of "Tokyo's Darkness" photographs by this unique photographer who has been capturing the dark side of Tohoku for over 15 years. The following is an excerpt from the text: "The deep, pitch-black darkness of the Dewa Sanzan mountains gave birth to a 'religion' that gazed into the inner workings of the human spirit, while the bright darkness of Edo gave birth to a 'performing art' that digs deep into the human heart." In addition to the fascinating text, "Notes on Tokyo," the photographer himself has also taken charge of the photography, text, composition, title lettering, and binding, making this a truly impressive book.
