The Nikakai was founded as an art association in 1914. The photography club was established in 1953 at the suggestion of Seiji Togo, a Western-style painter who was known as the "Don of the Nikakai." Tadahiko Hayashi, Shoji Otake, Shotaro Akiyama, and Yuji Hayata were founding members, and the Nikakai photography exhibition has been held every year since then. In the past, Shoji Ueda (2nd), Yukichi Watanabe (6th), Masatoshi Naito (11th), and Shozo Watari (19th) have won the Nika Prize, but this book, which marks the 20th exhibition, includes works by Shotaro Akiyama, "Flowers," Shoji Otake, "Stray Cat and Woman," Shoji Ueda, "On a Foggy Day," Kimio Aoki, "Twilight," Takashi Hamaguchi, "Moment of Urgency," Kaoru Usui, "Scarlet Peony Honor," Takeyuki Suzuki, "Shining Eyes," Ichiro Tanaka, "Spring Snow," and, more unusually, Yasushi Sugino, known for his elusive photo collection "Touched Landscapes," includes "White Rice Fields."
