"KATSURA / Katsura: Tradition and Creation in Japanese Architecture" is a photo collection by Ishimoto Yasuhiro, one of Japan's leading photographers. This is one of his representative works, along with "One Day, One Place" (1958) and "Chicago, Chicago" (1969). Ishimoto returned to Japan in the early 1950s and was fascinated by the unity and rhythm of Katsura's "garden, architecture, and space," which was different from other architecture he saw in Kyoto and Nara that same year. He stayed overnight at the famous Kyoto inn, "Tawaraya," to take the photos. The first edition, published in 1960, became an immortal masterpiece with a collaboration of many artists, including preface and text by Japan's leading architect Kenzo Tange and Bauhaus president Walter Gropius, layout and binding by fellow Bauhaus alumnus Herbert Bayer, and Katsura's title lettering by artist Toko Shinoda. The illustrations and layout of this new edition, published in 1971, were completely revised by Japan's leading graphic designer Yusaku Kamekura, who also designed Chicago, Chicago. This is another wonderful book. Comes with a rare dust jacket.
