"Snow Country / Snow Land (Asahi Sonorama)" is a photo collection by Japanese photographer Hiroshi Hamaya. Hiroshi Hamaya was a photojournalist and documentary photographer who continued to take photos of people living in the Japanese countryside throughout the prewar and postwar periods, and continued to publish numerous photos that sounded the alarm about the problems in those regions. In particular, "Back Japan" (1957), which captured people living in harsh living and working conditions on the Sea of Japan side, and "Records of Anger and Sorrow" (1960), a documentary that recorded the entire story of the Security Treaty struggle, are considered masterpieces that remain in the history of Japanese photography. This book is a long-awaited reprint of Hamaya's masterpiece, which is on par with the above-mentioned works published in 1956. "Front Japan" "Back Japan", the coastal area of the Sea of Japan, attracted Hamaya, who grew up in the city of Tokyo. Hamaya has been visiting "Echigo" and "Kuwatoriya" for many years, and has now settled in Takada, where he continues to depict the harsh winter scenes and people who live there. A precious record by a great photographer who was devoted to ethnology and continued to capture the Japanese climate and the daily lives of the people with a warm gaze. This is the Sonorama version, which has been re-edited with some content replaced from the first edition. This is the memorable first issue of the Sonorama Photo Selection series of 27 volumes. Second edition.
