"Tokyo" is a collection of works by Dutch photographer Paul Kooiker. Kooiker is known for his conceptual style that sharply cuts into the physicality, gaze, and institutional nature of the photographic medium, and always contains a critical attitude towards the act of photography itself. This book is a collection of images that began with a one-day shooting session he took in Tokyo in 2015 and was then digitally processed and reconstructed. The subject was a Japanese female model, and Kooiker mainly cropped her back into a square and abstracted the colors and form using Photoshop. The result is a photograph that is painterly or sculptural. While conscious of the context of 20th century art such as constructivism and surrealism, the work consistently questions the anonymity and physicality of the subject, leaving a strong visual impression on the viewer. This ambitious work boldly pushes the boundaries of photographic expression using the city of Tokyo as a medium. Limited to 1,200 copies.
