"Ama" is a photo collection by Japanese photographer Yoshinobu Nakamura. Born in 1925 on Naoshima Island, Kagawa Prefecture, his father was one of the last fishing owners on the island. He grew up gazing at the Seto Inland Sea, and continued his amateur photography even after joining Mitsubishi Refinery, studying under Yoichi Midorikawa, a leading photographer of the Seto Inland Sea. After turning 30, he became a professional photographer, capturing the local climate and culture through photographs in works such as "The Seto Inland Sea" and "The People of the Seto Inland Sea," while also leaving behind significant works conveying Japan's fading folk customs, such as "Steam Trains and Steam Locomotives" and "Ama." This book is a revised and expanded edition of Nakamura's masterpiece, "Ama of Japan," published in 1962. With the advent of wetsuits, "Ama" divers have become rare. Their brave, naked, loincloth-clad figures brave the ocean floor, radiating strength and grace. This book not only covers the culture of female divers in Japan, including Tsushima, Noto, Shima, Echigo, Kazusa, Bungo, Rikuchu, Awa, Matsumae, and Amami, but also introduces the culture of female divers in Asia, including Korea and Taiwan. It is also a valuable record collection from a folkloristic perspective. Commentary by Tsuneichi Miyamoto. Limited edition of 2,500 copies. Includes shipping box.
