Early American is a collection of works by American photographer Sharon Corr (1965-). Corr experimentally reconstructs still lifes and tabletop images from the early days of photography, continually exploring questions of visual reliability and "authenticity." In this work, Corr thoroughly studies the composition and texture of 19th-century American painting, particularly still lifes exemplified by Raphael Peale, and recreates them using plants cultivated by Corr himself and objects collected from his collection, creating a space where the aesthetics of the time intersect with contemporary photographic techniques. These images blur the boundaries between painting and photography, illuminating the historical question of the medium from a new angle and quietly sensitizing viewers to the "history of seeing." Faced with light and textures reconstructed across time, we are drawn into an ambiguous realm between reproduction and creation.
