"Slow Boat (First Edition)" is a photobook by Japanese photographer Koji Onaka. Born in Fukuoka Prefecture, Koji Onaka graduated from Tokyo College of Photography (now Tokyo Visual Arts) and joined the legendary independent gallery "CAMP," founded by Daido Moriyama and Keizo Kitajima. After a temporary closure, he reopened the gallery "Kaido" in 2016 and has continued to hold exhibitions both domestically and internationally, as well as actively publishing photobooks. He is known for his poetic and lyrical landscapes, including his early representative works "Tall Goldenrod" and "Distance." This book is a collection of black and white photographs taken throughout Japan between 1984 and 1999. It was also published in China in 2017. In this book, Onaka writes that when he reviewed his past contact prints for an exhibition in 2001, he felt a thrill of rediscovering his own photographs. Having transitioned from monochrome to color in 1999, Onaka confronted his past monochrome works and created this photobook by "selecting and editing my favorite shots regardless of place or time." It is a highly acclaimed book, sold in Germany and China, among other countries. Published in 2003, first edition.
