"El patio del diablo (The Devil's Playground)" is a collection of works by American photographer Nan Goldin (1953–). Published by Phaidon in 2003, this massive 500-page volume surveys her work from her early career to the early 2000s, and is a crucial work that compiles her activities since "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency." Goldin has consistently documented the intimate world she inhabits—friends, lovers, and the queer community—from within. In this book, too, the intertwining of life and death—love, friendship, desire, dependence, loss, and the birth of new life—are chronicled in diary-like sequences. On the other hand, it also includes serene images such as the sky, water, and landscapes represented by "Elements," a departure from her previous portrait-centered works, and the process of her gaze expanding into a more spiritual realm after her recovery is striking. The book also includes essays and poems by Nick Cave, Cookie Mueller, and others. This is one of the representative monographs of the 2000s, offering a multi-layered exploration of Goldin's private world and its transformations. (Spanish edition.)
